Talks of “clean energy” is everywhere, but coal still provides a third of the world’s electricity. Pylyp Travkin believes that coal is not a thing of the past, but a reality on which energy stability depends. Developed countries declare their intention to abandon coal, but they still use goods produced with coal-fired energy in Asia. “The transition away from coal must be managed, otherwise an environmental victory will become a social catastrophe,” Travkin emphasizes. CCS technologies, gasification, and modernization of power plants allow for reducing emissions without destroying the economy. A realistic transition is not about denying coal, but about knowing how to use it wisely.
